[Zenith News=Byeon Jinhee] Musical 'Xcalibur', which EMK ambitiously prepared again, has been unveiled. 'Xcalibur', which attracted attention even before opening with a great scale and casting the most famous actors, especially Kim Jun-su and Shin Young-suk, Arthur and Morgana were enough to fascinate the audience at once.
# The magnificent scale that was completed with a 10 billion Won budget
'Xcalibur' is the work that newly reinterpreted the legend of King Arthur who protected ancient England from the invasion of the Saxons. It contains the story of one pure person who appeared in the age filled with fear and uncertainty, showing the strength of the Excalibur, while containing the story of love, magic, war and death at the same time.
While the previous musicals whose theme was King Arthur unfolded the story by focusing on the love story, ‘Xcalibur’ maintains the character settings inasmuch as it adapted the legend. However, it focuses on King Arthur’s epic in which a normal boy called Arthur becomes a king, and shows the process of him showing his desire and growing up by controlling it and finally becoming a king and protecting the nation and his people.
EMK, which was established in 2009, and succeeded in various musicals, such as ’Mozart!’, ‘Monte Cristo’, ‘Rebecca’, ‘Mata Hari’ and ‘The Man Who Laughs’ chose ‘Xcalibur’ this time. Since they invested 10 billion won in the work to complete, it provides a huge set, lighting, image and other spectacular things to watch.
The charm that music has itself is great as well. Composer Frank Wildhorn presents the numbers with a dramatic melody by choosing pop genre as a base. However, the music's pitch is low and grand when the Saxons gather together to prepare for a battle. It is very overwhelming when dozens of people with percussion instruments including the drum, make a sound.

# Kim Jun-su finally found his career-defining character
Starting with ‘Mozart‘ in 2010, Kim Jun-su established his position in the field of musicals with ‘Tears of Heaven’, ‘Elizabeth’, ‘December’, ‘Dracula’, ‘Death Note’ and ‘Dorian Gray.’ In each work, he established unique characters with the nicknames, such as ‘Sazart’, ‘Satod’ and ‘owner’ and this time he is called ‘King Sarthur’ since he plays ‘Arthur’, attracting attention.
It’s been 10 years for him as a musical actor. His real value shines even more in this work. The vocals when Arthur was a young man and the strong, appealing voice after he became a king, show the growth of Arthur in full.
Inasmuch as he leads the center of the play, acting skills are very important as well. Kim Jun-su depicts in detail all of the emotions that change in the process when the ordinary 18 year old boy Arthur loves, agonizes and becomes derailed and becomes a king after awakening from the pain. Kim Jun-su’s acting is one of the points that the audiences need to watch.
Especially, his solo acting and singing in‘the path in front of me’ which he presents in the Act I before drawing his sword with a tragic figure and ‘What it is like to be a king’ which he sang by expressing complex emotions, such as loneliness right before war and determination in Act II, make the audience feel shudder. The voice that only Kim Jun-su can make fills the grand theater of Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, delivering the moving moments.

# Charming woman character, and harmonious ensemble
Shin Young-suk, who played the role of Morgana, Arthur's step-sister is more than anticipated. She bitterly depicts Morgana who has a mysterious ability and is trying to take the throne which was originally hers from Arthur.
Shin Young-suk's passionate singing for 'Father's sin' was very intense and it also has been decided to be released earlier due to its high popularity. Even with the high pitched tone, Shin Young-suk shows an explosive singing ability which makes listeners feel liberated.
Other than this, the chemistry between Park Kang-hyun and Kim Jun-su, and the tragic, mysterious aspect of Kim Jun-hyun who plays Merlin and acting collaborations of other various ensembles doubles the fun to watch the play.
Meanwhile, 'Xcalibur' will be performed till the 4th of August in the grand theater of Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.
