[Zenith News=Jieun Oh] "Every moment of acting is thrilling and overwhelming. The vague dreams in high school are coming true one by one, and all these moments that I am experiencing were once my dreams."
Shin Hyun-soo played Gook Gi-bong, co-CEO of the guest house Waikiki and a second-tier baseball player in the recently ended JTBC drama 'Welcome to Waikiki 2'. Gook Gi-bong is a serious and bewildered person, but his heart is weak, and has the charms of an idiot and ingenious man.
It was Shin Hyun-soo's first acting transformation, which had built a warm image by playing warm and dandy characters in 'Hello, My Twenties!', ‘My Golden Life’ and ‘Twelve Nights’. Many people questioned the image of the innocent man. But Shin Hyun-soo, who took off his veil on 'Welcome to Waikiki 2', was undoubtedly Gook Gi-bong itself. He had a smirk that was brighter than a child, and made viewers’ heart beat with sometimes silly but sometimes mature looks.
What kind of dream will Shin Hyun-soo have in the future after he successfully transformed his image by drawing positive reviews? After the end of 'Welcome to Waikiki 2', Zenith News and Shin Hyun-soo met and talked at a cafe in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam, Seoul. In fact, Shin Hyun-soo that we met in person was Gook Gi-bong itself. Shin Hyun-soo happily led the interview with his smile and witty remarks. The behind-the-scenes story of 'Welcome to Waikiki 2' and his future plans will be revealed here.
Q. How did you feel about ending 'Welcome to Waikiki 2'?
We started shooting last December, and we had a lot of affection for each other while we were filming until May. It was fun because of the comedy genre, but we relied on each other to share energy when we had difficulties. I'm so sad that I have to be separated from the actors I've been with. I was really sad during the last shoot and didn't want to part ways with them. I don't know when I can meet such good people again. These days, I'm obsessed and trying to get in touch with them.
Q. What made you decide to appear in 'Welcome to Waikiki 2'?
It's my third time working on a seasonal work. What I felt during the season was that the fan’s love of Season 1 is both difficult and attractive. It was a fun job to do deal with because the new person can show different charms from season 1. Gook Gi-bong was sure of his character, and it was great to overcome it and turn it into a romance through Cha Yoo-ri (Kim Ye-won). I think I decided to take the role because there were so many fun points in it.

Q. You became the only father in the ending. Do you like it?
I think it was the most Gook Gi-bong-style ending. It's funny that the most innocent of friends is the first one to be a dad, and the love of the troublemaker was well expressed. And it was nice because it was my first time to be a father in a drama.
Q. How did you intend to express Gook Gi-bong?
I was confirmed for 'Welcome to Waikiki 2' when I was working on 'Twelve Nights'. We had more than 20 meetings before the first shoot. Back then I was still Hyun-oh (played by Shin Hyun-soo), so I felt like I was having an affair with Gook Gi-bong. So I acted more like a fool, but I didn't like it.
Then I thought, "Why am I acting?" So that's why I thought of going back to the beginning. Thinking in a simple one-dimensional way solved it easily. I didn't think that I should make it funny. Acting seriously made it funnier. I played a very serious stupid scene, and Kim Seon-ho even said, "Isn't it impossible to live a normal life?". Even though I looked stupid in the drama, the innocence was my charm.
Q. What's your real personality like?
After spending six months with Gook Gi-bong, we became very similar. Every time I play a role, I tend to become similar to the characters so I don't know what my personality is. I tend to do a lot of situational drama on site and once, Kim Ye-won said, “The Shin Hyun-soo that I saw for the first time and the Shin Hyun-soo that I see at the end of the drama are so different. He just looks stupid". Everyone says, "He became Gook Gi-bong as he is" and I loved it. I think it was a thankful meeting.

Q. I think you are really attached to the character.
I have a lot of affection for all the characters as much as I tend to be similar to the characters. I'm always interviewing after I finish a work, and through interviews, I say goodbye while explaining, "This i show the character is like". However, I couldn't do interviews during 'Twelve Nights' so I feel like I couldn't say goodbye properly. That's why I'm doing an interview for 'Welcome to Waikiki 2'. Hence the moment I am doing an interview is more precious and feels empty. It feels like Gook Gi-bong and Cha Hyun-oh (played by Shin Hyun-soo) are leaving together.
Q. So, how much have you gotten out of Gook Gi-bong?
I think it's hard to calculate. I feel like I am still Gook Gi-bong since it is the co-workers at 'Welcome to Waikiki 2' that I contact the most. I had lived and spoken like Gook Gi-bong for 6 months, so I'm still more comfortable this way. I haven’t sent him away completely. We are still saying good-bye to each other.
Q. Did you have any hard times during the shoot?
I shot 'Hello, My Twenties! 2' while I was filming 'My Golden Life’. Jong-ryul (played by Shin Hyun-soo) was a familiar friend from season one, so I didn't feel sorry for the character. And I did a work called ‘The Time Left Between Us’, and I filmed it while filming alongside 'The Twelfth Night'. However, Hyun-soo from 'The Time Left Between Us' (played by Shin Hyun-soo) and Cha Hyun-oh from 'Twelve Nights' had different personalities, so it wasn't easy to act while going back and forth between these character.
I think I tried harder because I didn't want to neglect anyone even if I was having a hard time. Then, I took on the role of Gook Gi-bong for 'Welcome to Waikiki 2'. It's was a self disunion just like the movie 'Split'. Haha. Luckily Hyun-soo left and I think I was able to focus more since Hyun-oh and Gook Gi-bong were the only ones left. I had a really hard time when the three overlapped.
