[Zenith News=Jieun Oh] "Every moment of acting is thrilling and overwhelming. The vague dreams in high school are coming true one by one, and all these moments that I am experiencing were once my dreams."
Shin Hyun-soo played Gook Gi-bong, co-CEO of the guest house Waikiki and a second-tier baseball player in the recently ended JTBC drama 'Welcome to Waikiki 2'. Gook Gi-bong is a serious and bewildered person, but his heart is weak, and has the charms of an idiot and ingenious man.
It was Shin Hyun-soo's first acting transformation, which had built a warm image by playing warm and dandy characters in 'Hello, My Twenties!', ‘My Golden Life’ and ‘Twelve Nights’. Many people questioned the image of the innocent man. But Shin Hyun-soo, who took off his veil on 'Welcome to Waikiki 2', was undoubtedly Gook Gi-bong itself. He had a smirk that was brighter than a child, and made viewers’ heart beat with sometimes silly but sometimes mature looks.
What kind of dream will Shin Hyun-soo have in the future after he successfully transformed his image by drawing positive reviews? After the end of 'Welcome to Waikiki 2', Zenith News and Shin Hyun-soo met and talked at a cafe in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam, Seoul. In fact, Shin Hyun-soo that we met in person was Gook Gi-bong itself. Shin Hyun-soo happily led the interview with his smile and witty remarks. The behind-the-scenes story of 'Welcome to Waikiki 2' and his future plans will be revealed here.

Q. The kiss scene you showed in the last episode was impressive. We didn't think Gook Gi-bong was that kind of person.
We saw that scene at the end of the drama, and Kim Ye-won and I were shocked when watching it. Even though Gook Gi-bong quit playing baseball, he wanted to play baseball again somewhere in his heart. Cha Yoo-ri (played by Kim Ye-won) realized what he actually wanted and her goal was to understand Gook Gi-bong. The kiss was rather something extra. Kim Ye-won was so good at acting, and the power of her voice made me almost cry. We both worked really hard because of our emotions. We were so embarrassed because the scene came out too aggressive. Of course, the lines were a little strong.
Q. How was your collaboration with Kim Ye-won?
Before the start of the drama, Kim Ye-won asked the staff what Shin Hyun-soo was like, and everyone said, "There's no such young man these days". She said it was great. I talked a lot about acting while I was acting with her. But at first, she said "Your seriousness is a charm, and you have a good posture when you act". I started to become more mischievous as I slowly became more like Gi-bong, and at the end she said, "Shin Hyun-soo is so different on the first episode and last episode." I've been really playful.
Q. I think the atmosphere at the site was good.
The director thought the story was fun only when the full shot was fun, so we had a full-shot rehearsal for a long time. Since I was filmed in full-shot, breathing and reactions were important like in a play. I kept trying to keep up with them in the waiting room. As a result, the atmosphere on the site was really good. I really enjoyed checking everything and matching it up. Due to the drama's characteristics, it's hard to create a detailed environment but 'Welcome to Waikiki 2' was created by making it look like a college play.

Q. 'Welcome to Waikiki 2' is a drama that depicts the reality of young people even within the laughter. What is the worry of young man Shin Hyun-soo?
It's a worry that I don't have any worries. When I'm optimistic about something like this, I forget about it quickly. If anyone doesn't agree with me, I'll just move on thinking ‘It’s just the way the person is’. I thought it was a good thing at first, but on the other hand, I think it's bad because I'm calming myself down alone.
I think when it comes to worries about acting, I'm thinking too much about my work. So I'm so happy and enjoy being at the scene. I enjoy the moment when I act, so I feel less happy when I'm not working. Shin Hyun-soo is so happy when working on a production, so the happiness in his life is smaller than the happiness in the acting scene. Of course, my hobby is to take pictures, watch movies, and listening to music, but I feel happiest when I act. That's the problem.
Q. Have you decided on the next work yet?
I had a pneumothorax during 'Twelve Nights'. I was so sorry that it interfered with the shooting. In fact, I was worried that it might reoccur during 'Welcome to Waikiki 2'. Of course, I'm cured now, but I'm going to take a break and take care of preventing a recurrence of pneumothorax in order to prevent a possible accident. I hate looking weak the most and I don't want to cause any trouble. Also, I hate having pneumothorax in my related search keyword, and if I search for pneumothorax, I don't want to see Shin Hyun-soo, so I'll be healthier. That's why I don't read the calls for work on purpose now because I'm afraid I'll get greedy if I see them. I'm going to do my work when I'm a super healthy man.
Q. What kind of acting do you want to do in the future?
I want to do a romantic comedy. I enjoy expressing love, but I've never expressed it in my own way. I want to express my sorrowful, pleasant and sad love with my independent leading.
Q. What kind of actor do you want to be remembered by the public?
When I was a college student, a professor said, "A good person can be a good actor". It was so abstract that I wondered about it at the time, but after six years in the field, I got to know the meaning of it. I think acting is a reflection of an actor's life. I think viewers seem to catch that. I couldn't fool them.
I think I can live a pretty satisfying life if I don't lose my faith in being a good person and lose my excitement about going out to the filing site. I'm so excited and overwhelmed at this moment. When I was in high school, I dreamed vaguely, "Can I be the main character someday and have an interview?", but it happened. If you enjoy the moment and act with excitement all the time, you'll be considered a good actor someday. I want to be a good person and an actor.
