The story of Gwynplaine, a disfigured, sensual young man with a mutilated mouth, is hideous enough to appeal audiences. Suho, who played Gwynplaine increases the attention by his unexpected acting skill.
The musical The Man Who Laughs is based on the greatest French novelist Victor Hugo’s novel The Man Who Laughs. The story’s setting is in 17th century of England, where class discrimination was at its peak. This musical shows a journey of Gwynplaine, who has the most innocent personality with disfigured face. It criticized the society without justice and humanity, and shows the human dignity and the equality thought Gwynplaine’s life.
Gwynplaine stands at the center of the narrative. The story behind why his mouth is torn, the beautiful love story between Gwynplaine and the blind girl Dea, the love of Duchess, Josiana who enjoys his performances, and the secret behind his birth… Audiences only can breathe with Gwynplaine’s perspective, dialogues, and his movements.
That is why Suho's acting is mesmerizing. First off, he had to deal with the prejudice that he is not a professional theater actor. The Man Who Laughs is Suho's second work as a main character after Rudolf. He also got pressure since the other two actors has far more experience than him, Hyo-shin Park and Gang-hyun Park, casted together. However Suho succeeded to be Gwynplaine himself. It was the moment that he proves his effort.
Suho’s Gwynplaine is nothing similar to the crown prince Rudolf of Rudolf. The emotion, the lyrics, the volume of the singing voice, and etc... There is a huge development in every skills of his acting compared to his previous work. Suho singing a musical numbers, not a K-POP songs, is the complete moving point of this show.
The beautiful appearance of Suho is another attraction of The Man Who Laughs. The combination of smiling face with torn mouth and his sad eyes makes the audiences to be pitiful with the character. That is the reason why the audiences can sympathize with Duchess Josiana who falls in love for Gwynplaine. The sweet scenes and sad scenes between Gwynplaine and Dea also touch the audience’s heart.
There are various attractions in The Man Who Laughs as well as actors' performances including Suho. The various musical numbers, the technical choreography, the costumes that contrast between the noble class and the lower class, the spectacular stage production and the video suitable for the musical shows the aspect of the masterpiece that invested 17.5 billion Korean won.
The stage production is inspired by the wounds and the tunnels. There are various eye-catching points on this show such as huge waves made out of fabrics, Gwynplaine's torn mouth symbolized by countless scars, and the splendid sets with the message “The paradise of the rich is built by the hell of the poor”.
The Man Who Laughs performs on July 10th to upcoming August 26th at the Opera Theater of Seoul Arts Center as the world premiere, and will be performing at the Interpark Hall, Blue Square on September 4th to October 28th.
